Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a group counseling program based on the Elective theory in improving parental sense of competence among sample of mothers of adolescents in Jordan. A quasi-experimental design used, the sample included 30 subjects selected intentionally and were then randomly assigned to two groups of experimental (n=15) and control (n=15). All participants were asked to complete A questionnaire of Parenting Sense of Competence (PSOC) developed by the principal investigator, consists of (17) items that measure two areas: parenting skill and satisfaction with parental performance. The experimental group underwent the group therapy for (12) sessions, but the control group received no treatment. Data were analyzed using two-way (ANCOVA) and (MANCOVA) analysis. The results showed that there are statistically significant differences at the level (a = 0.05) between the performance averages of the members of the experimental and control groups due to the indicative program, and no statistically significant difference between the post and follow-up measures, which indicates the continuity of the impact of the extension program, based on these findings the principal investigator significantly recommended the application of the counseling program targeting fathers of adolescent, and teachers.
