Abstract:

This study is concerned with answering an important question, which is: To what extent Ibn Ashur perceived the phenomenon of repetition as one of the elements of textual coherence? The aim is to show the efforts exerted by an Arab scholar for a phenomenon that is one of the pillars of the theory of textual coherence.

The research collected the sites in which Ibn Ashour spoke about the occasion of repetition, especially in the Surahs of Al-Maedah and Al-Aaam, and then adopted the analytical method in studying these subjects.

The study reached a number of results, the most important of which are: Ibn Ashour's use of direct vocabulary shows his awareness of the role of repetition in textual coherence, and his uniqueness in referring to some areas of repetition and its occasions without other commentators from whom he learned, and his verbal repetition functions were numerous, so that it achieved the textual link between interrelated semantic relationships such as enumeration, independence, punctuation, emphasis, and others.

He also has many functions of implicit repetition that contribute to the textual coherence, including: confirmation, explanation, declaring after allusion, and others.

Keywords: Textual Cohesion, Verbal Repetition, Implicit Repetition.
